This website is dedicated to our pregnancy journey. My husband and I found out we were pregnant with our 3rd child on July 25, 2014. We were so excited with this news because we had been trying to conceive for two years. The next two months of pregnancy were very uneventful. I had the normal morning sickness but felt great and continued with all normal activities.
On Wednesday, October 22, I was almost 17 weeks along and started bleeding and cramping. I went into the doctor's office the next morning to have an ultrasound to see if the baby was okay. The ultrasound showed a healthy and happy baby, but other complications. I was taken by ambulance to Sioux Falls to be seen immediately by a specialist. The specialist was concerned with two weak spots on my uterus. These paper thin spots were located on my scar tissue from my previous c-sections. The hospital sent me home with strict orders to "take things easy". No lifting, no bending over, no exercise, and to try to stay off my feet as much as possible. The specialist said they would be keeping a close eye on me and would be monitoring me in Sioux Falls every two weeks.
Brett and I traveled back to Sioux Falls for our next specialist appointment on Friday, November 7, when I was 19 weeks along. During the ultrasound we found out that we were expecting a little girl--much to our surprise and joy! The specialist said the spots on my uterus were still a concern and would continue to stretch out and thin as our baby grew. This would be a major concern as we progressed with the pregnancy, and could possibly require more medical care in Sioux Falls. I went home feeling discouraged and nervous that if I went into early labor, my uterus could rupture.
The next few weeks were very uneventful. I stayed on partial bed rest and "took it easy". We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and were feeling very encouraged as I was feeling great. Then late on Friday, November 28, when I was only 22 weeks along, I felt my water leak. Brett and I rushed to Sioux Falls and were taken immediately up to the Labor and Delivery floor. The nurses and doctors confirmed that my amniotic sac had ruptured. Our baby girl was fine, and even waved to us in the Ultrasound as she rolled around. I was admitted into the hospital with grim news that I could possibly lose the baby that evening. After every test possible, the specialist explained that I was at extreme risk of infection and early labor. And at 22 weeks old, the baby had 0% chance of survival. We were devastated. We stayed in the hospital for 3 days without any sign of labor or infection. And then we were sent home. Because the baby "would not/could not" survive before 24 weeks, so there was nothing they could do for us. Again, I was devastated. They told us we would be readmitted into the hospital in two weeks, when we were 24 weeks along. Until then, I would need to be on strict bed rest at home to prevent infection and labor pains.
And that is why: Every second counts...and we are waiting, hoping, praying that we make it just one more day, one more week, one more month...
